Thomas E. Burnett Jr. Leadership Program
When Burnett challenged the hijackers on United Flight 93, he acted as a citizen who knew he could make a difference. That is the essence of leadership. The University’s leadership programs teach students how to become personal leaders who are active, engaged citizens committed to the broader community. Through a breadth of activities, students learn about citizenship and social justice, and about learning how to enact change, one person at a time. Each semester ten University of Minnesota students will be chosen to participate in the highly selective Burnett Leadership Program, an advanced leadership development program focused on identifying and nurturing future leaders. The program features life and career mentoring by a faculty member or a leader in business or the non-profit sector; bi-weekly leadership workshops; and in-depth assessment of each student’s personality traits, potential career paths, and leadership skills.

The Thomas E. Burnett Jr. Leadership Award
The Thomas E. Burnett Jr. Leadership Award honors one University of Minnesota student each year who has shown extraordinary leadership and courage in community service. This new award recognizes the student’s commitment and ability to enact change in his or her community. Nomination will be accepted from supervisors at nonprofits with which the students have volunteered their time and/or engaged in service learning projects. A monetary award will be granted to the student and to the nominating organization.

The Thomas E. Burnett Jr. Scholarship
Burnett, who was raised in the Twin Cities, graduated from the Carlson School of Management in 1986 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He was a loyal member of Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity. At the time of his death at age 38 he was senior vice president of Thoratec Corporation, a medical research and development company. Shortly before his death, he told his employees, “What we accomplish in life – our pursuits, our passions – echoes in posterity to our children, our neighbors and ultimately our souls.” In recognition of Burnett’s courage, the University has established the Thomas E. Burnett Jr. Scholarship in the Carlson School of Management to help current students achieve their academic and career goals.
